Advice from your ophthalmologist

In everyday life

Hygiene and eye protection

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent infection and irritation.
  • Wash your hands regularly before touching your eyes or wearing contact lenses.
  • Use safety goggles when exposed to chemicals or performing hazardous work.
  • Protect your eyes from the sun with UV-filtering sunglasses.

Prevention and healthy living

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, E and omega-3 (fish, carrots, spinach, nuts…).
  • Avoid smoking, which increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
  • Take visual breaks when working on a screen: the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away [6 mètres] for 20 seconds).
  • Ensure good lighting when reading or working on a screen.

Medical monitoring and controls

  • Consult an ophthalmologist regularly, especially after age 40 or if you have a family history of eye disease.
  • Monitor changes in vision: any change (blurred vision, pain, headaches, glare, etc.) should be reported.
  • Monitor intraocular pressure to detect glaucoma.
  • Wear glasses or contact lenses adapted to the visual correction prescribed.

Good use of screens

  • Limit prolonged exposure to screens and adjust brightness to reduce eye fatigue.
  • Position the screen at a minimum distance of 50 cm and slightly below eye level.
  • Use artificial tears for dry eyes caused by screens.
